From our Foundation, it has remained the aim of successive Headmasters that means-tested bursaries and scholarships should be available to gifted children from the local area. Those awards offered today make it possible for many boys to attend the School irrespective of their families’ financial circumstances. I believe the Founder, Richard Patton, would approve wholeheartedly of the opportunities the Bursary programme offers to boys from the area, continuing a long tradition he established of providing subsidised places for worthy students and in cases of hardship.
Over the last 125 years, we have made effort to raise funds to support scholarships for children here at St. Anthony’s, alumni and parents have been extremely generous in your support. However the number and size of bursaries that the School provides has increased substantially over the last couple of years, increasing the pressure on this resource. In addition, increasingly, independent school fees are beyond the reach of some families; our fundraising efforts for the Bursary Fund are now more important than ever.
This anniversary provides a fantastic opportunity to continue and extend this important part of St. Anthony’s legacy and with this in mind we have set ourselves an ambition to raise
£250,000 to establish a bursary endowment fund.
While we appreciate that not everyone will be able to make this gesture, I encourage you to participate at whatever level you can, in the knowledge that many relatively small gifts can combine to make a real difference for individual children.
I remain determined to give more young people a chance to benefit from the transformational opportunity a St. Anthony’s education can provide.
We hope you will join in support.
